This week I looked into ways one can learn how to deal with their mental health that is affected by a diabetic lifestyle. I learned a lot about "diabetic distress". This is when one has a fear of having too high or blood sugars and/or too low of blood sugars. It also came to my attention that more than half of people diagnosed with diabetes have had this type of distress at least once in their life at any age. To help with this type of distress, I learned that it is best to make a stable routine so that the child can make sure that they start to adjust to their new lifestyle accordingly.
I have also learned that 45% of people that have been diagnosed with any type of diabetes, have mental health issues that go unnoticed. This can lead to major problems because it could lead to self endangerment and/ or more stress. This could be solved with actually going to therapy like CBT, Family therapy, and other types that could help with cognitive thoughts about one's self after diagnosis. There is also a specific type of therapy that could help like the Dialectical-behavioral therapy, for people who have a hard time with their emotions and distress tolerance due to the change in their lifestyle.
